Volvo EX90: The Beginning of a New Era
November 14 2022,
Although it’s not the first Volvo with a battery, the new EX90 is not like the others. This recently unveiled model from the Swedish brand is the most advanced yet in terms of technology and ecology!
Your Volvo dealership tells you more about these technologies, the eco-friendly design and the technical specifications of the new vehicle.
2023 Volvo EX90: Smart Safety with LiDAR
Safety has always been a strength at Volvo, but with this new model it’s taken to a whole new level. The development of artificial intelligence has been used to create a brand-new system called LiDAR.
What is it all about? As Gabriel Gélinas explains in The Car Guide:
“It’s a remote sensing and ranging device similar to a radar,
but it emits pulses of infrared light [...]
and then measures their return time after being reflected.”
In short, the detection of nearby objects is more accurate than ever! The Volvo EX90 SUV will be able to inform you of pedestrians 250 meters in advance, giving you plenty of time to react.
And that’s not all: in addition to monitoring your surroundings, the Volvo SUV also keeps a sharp eye on your cabin. Depending on the brand, it will be able to detect:
- Lack of attention
- Falling asleep
- Intoxication
- And even illness!
If the vehicle notices that you have fallen asleep, it will move itself to a safe place and stop. In addition, the Volvo car will be able to drive autonomously when the law allows it.
Electric SUV: A Powerful 111 kWh Battery
The second way the new electric Volvo stands out from the rest of the lineup is by offering a higher capacity battery. This results in two advantages: power and range.
In fact, the battery powers two electric motors with a combined output of up to 496 horsepower! Here’s what we know about the specifications of the upcoming electric SUV:
Specifications |
Volvo EX90 |
Battery |
111 kWh |
Power |
496 horsepower |
Torque |
671 lb-ft |
Range |
480km |
Moreover, the battery can be charged in 30 minutes (10 to 80%) using the fast-charging system.
Not only is it powerful, but it also has another advantage: it offers bi-directional charging! This means that it cannot only be recharged, but also:
- Act as a generator
- Recharge your devices
- And even supply electricity to your home!
Volvo Electric Car: An Eco-Friendly Design
With this new Volvo electric car, the brand is looking to go further than a simple engine change. Indeed, ecology is also at the heart of the vehicle’s design, which relies on sustainable materials.
Recycled plastic, as well as recycled metals such as steel and aluminum are used in its manufacture. In addition, no animal leather is used, but a material called Nordico, which consists of biological and recycled materials. These materials mimic leather while reducing the carbon footprint by 70%.
In addition to its eco-friendliness, the Volvo EX90 is also highlighted as a mid-size SUV with room for 7 adult passengers. The brand also claims to have plenty of cargo space, although the figures have yet to be confirmed.
Furthermore, the Swedish brand still offers state-of-the-art technologies including integrated Google and a full set of intuitive features. The revealed images show a large vertical screen in the center of the dashboard.
Additionally, a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system will be available for audiophiles. Even though we still don’t know the details, we can expect a luxurious interior worthy of the brand.
Volvo EX90: Exterior Design Inspired by the Recharge Concept
On the outside, the EX90 is in the same vein as the latest electrified vehicles, including the Volvo C40. A black roof, dynamically styled wheels and the iconic Thor’s Hammer LED headlights make up its styling. The shapes are also designed with aerodynamics in mind.
With this next vehicle, Volvo Canada is getting into the swing of things. Its promise? To offer one new electric car per year until 2030, when all vehicles will be emission-free.
Until then, which car should you buy in 2022? Those who need a 7-seater SUV can look to the XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid, while those who are mainly looking for a zero-emission vehicle can look to the C40 or the XC40 Recharge.
